Session Review – Supporting Teammates In Possession

SESSION REVIEW – W/C 25th November ’19

PlayFutsal provides Futsal coaching for children in Bracknell, Wokingham & Farnham.

LEARNING BLOCK – Dominating Possession | FOCUS – Supporting Team Mates When In Possession

PHYSICAL CHALLENGE – Can I find really good spaces & angles to help my team mates? | SOCIAL CHALLENGE – Can I show encouragement and be a good team player if my team mates loses the ball?

WHY? – PHYSICAL | This week our players were focused on what they do when they haven’t got the ball and understood how important this is when your team are in possession. We discussed the importance of being ‘alive’ when their team are in possession and what they should be doing in order to find the ball. Often, players will stand still to receive which makes you easier to mark from the opponents – instead, being on the move at all times and finding spaces and gaps to receive the ball makes you harder to mark and it’s therefore easier to find the ball. We spoke to the players about not giving up if they don’t receive after finding a great space, even the top players don’t receive the ball all of the time when they make clever movements!

WHY? – SOCIAL | How we communicate and encourage our team mates in this process is really important, as team mates and friends we have to be supportive of our players around us if they lose the ball and we must show the desire to attempt to win the ball back if our team loses possession – by being positive in these situations creates a good team spirit and allows us to learn and develop well within the team.

TOP LEARNERS | Well done to our Top Learners below who have impressed us with their learning, these include players from Berkshire Futsal Club and FC Bracknell.

LEARNING BLOCK – Dominating Possession | FOCUS – Using Team Mates When In Possession

TECHNICAL CHALLENGE – Can I support my team mates quickly with a pass? | PHYSICAL CHALLENGE – Can I scan for available team mates under pressure?

WHY? – TECHNICAL | The speed of our decision-making in Futsal is hugely important for individual and team success, it allows us to attack quickly which will result in more chances created and it also allows us to counter-attack quickly at the right time. This week focused on supporting team mates around us with a forward pass and players were challenged to make this decision as quickly as possible before our team mates were marked and therefore unavailable – the speed of our decision, the weight and speed of pass and our direction of pass were highlighted as being the important fundamentals of this process.

WHY? – PHYSICAL| Knowing what’s around you and who’s around you allows us to be confident that we’re making the right decision but doing this when an opponent is putting you under pressure takes fantastic bravery on the ball. Our players were encouraged to scan whilst being put under pressure and by keeping your eyes on the ball and the players around you builds awareness and confidence in these situations.

LEARNING BLOCK – Dominating Possession | FOCUS – Staying Calm Under Pressure

TECHNICAL CHALLENGE – Can I be technically comfortable under pressure? | PHYSICAL CHALLENGE – Can I use my body to protect the ball under pressure?

WHY? – TECHNICAL | Continuing with our under pressure sessions, this week was focused on the technical decisions we have when under pressure. To allow us to make the correct decision, we have to understand the surroundings before knowing what decision to take and doing this under pressure is sometimes difficult during the period of learning. Our players are encouraged to stay calm under pressure and during this ‘calmness’ we can make our decisions, the decisions we face when on the ball is whether to pass, dribble or shoot and we must come to the correct decision in a positive mindset – our positive mindset includes staying calm & comfortable under pressure and believing that you can do it! The more comfortable we are under pressure, the more chances we have of keeping the ball for our team, making the right individual decisions and becoming a better player!

WHY? – PHYSICAL| During the time of being pressured from an opponent, we can use our body to buy us some time – if a player is trying to tackle us from behind or the side, we can use our body to protect the ball from the opponent by using ourselves as the block. If we can block successfully and put our body in-between the ball and the opponent, this gives us an extra 1 or 2 seconds that we may need on the ball before making our decision. We encouraged our players to protect the ball fairly by using their upper & lower body and their arms – it’s important for players to understand the difference in protecting the ball and not making a foul by ‘pushing’ their opponent.

HOME LEARNING | Our players are now on Activity #2 which includes an aerial first touch challenge and observing some great goals from a Futsal game on YouTube, we’ll show you the great work done by our players on social media soon!

LEARNING BLOCK – Dominating Possession | FOCUS – Passing & Receiving Under Pressure

TECHNICAL CHALLENGE – Can I pass & receive under pressure? | PSYCHOLOGICAL CHALLENGE – Am I checking my shoulders regularly to be aware of opponents & space?

WHY? – TECHNICAL | We started our ‘Dominating Possession’ learning block with a series of sessions focused on how we develop players whilst under pressure. Playing under pressure is a fundamental part of becoming a player who is comfortable in possession and makes the correct choice whilst being pressured from an opponent. If players are in a mindset of panicking or rushing their decision when an opponent puts them under pressure, they are not setting the key foundations for future progression, we develop our players to stay calm and not to panic in pressurised situations which encourages them to play relaxed at all times.

WHY? – PSYCHOLOGICAL| Regularly checking shoulders allows players to take lots of pictures during the game – in possession, they need to take pictures of their surroundings in order for them to look for opponents and spaces when on the ball, this allows them to make the correct choice whilst under pressure as they’re aware of what’s in front and behind them. If players don’t check their shoulders enough during the game, this will ultimately make their decision harder when on the ball which in turn could slow the game down and increase the chances of losing possession.
